Dorothy Tennov coined this in 1979. The obsessive, intrusive, all-consuming state of infatuation — the "can't stop thinking about them" phase of early attraction. Characterized by intrusive thoughts, a desperate longing for reciprocation, euphoria when it comes, and devastation when it doesn't. Some research suggests neurochemical similarities to OCD, though the evidence is limited. Distinct from love — it can feel like love but is driven by dopamine and norepinephrine, not genuine intimacy. Usually fades within 6 months to 3 years. Important to know because many people chase it as the measure of "real" love.
