Belgian psychotherapist Esther Perel focuses on the tension between security and freedom in long-term relationships. Her central insight: the same things we need for love (safety, closeness, knowing) are the enemies of desire (mystery, novelty, distance). Domestication kills eroticism — not because something is wrong with you, but because they have opposite conditions.
On infidelity: Perel argues affairs are rarely just about sex or a broken relationship. Often they're about the person seeking aliveness, identity, or something lost in themselves. Her work on affairs is deliberately non-judgmental and remarkably useful for anyone trying to understand (or survive) infidelity.
