Robert Sternberg's 1986 model. Love has three components — Intimacy (closeness and connection), Passion (physical and romantic attraction), and Commitment (decision to stay). Seven types of love result from their combinations:
- **Liking** — Intimacy only. Close friendship. - **Infatuation** — Passion only. Intense attraction with no real knowledge of or commitment to the person. - **Empty Love** — Commitment only. Staying without connection or passion. - **Romantic Love** — Intimacy + Passion. Deep connection and attraction, but no long-term commitment yet. - **Companionate Love** — Intimacy + Commitment. Deep friendship and partnership; passion has faded. - **Fatuous Love** — Passion + Commitment. Whirlwind commitment without real intimacy. - **Consummate Love** — All three. The complete form. Most couples cycle between these types over time.
