Developed by Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt. The core insight: we're unconsciously drawn to romantic partners who resemble our childhood caregivers — not because we're broken, but because we're trying to heal unresolved wounds. "Imago" is Latin for image; it's the internalized composite of all early significant relationships.
The theory says frustration in a relationship is not a sign of wrong partner — it's the door to growth. Your partner triggers you in the exact ways you need to grow. The conflict is the curriculum.
Imago therapy uses structured dialogue (the "Imago Dialogue" — mirroring, validation, and empathy) to turn frustration into connection rather than disconnection.
